Careers: Join Our Crew — Komodo Liveaboard

July 12, 2026 7 min read

Komodo Island Liveaboard hires captains, dive guides, chefs, and hospitality crew directly from Flores communities, prioritizing BNSP, PADI, SSI, and STCW-certified locals. To apply, send a CV and certification copies via WhatsApp +62 811 3823 875 or email sales@komodoluxury.com — our Labuan Bajo-based leadership reviews every application personally.

Why a Small Crew Carries a Big Reputation

Komodo island liveaboard is a specialist liveaboard operator in the Komodo Luxury network, based in Labuan Bajo, curating stay-aboard phinisi expeditions from 1 to 11 nights across Komodo National Park — world-class diving, snorkeling, Padar and Pink Beach, and Komodo dragon trekking. None of that runs on autopilot. A yacht at anchor off Padar Island at dawn, a dive briefing before a Castle Rock drop, a plate of grilled snapper served on a rolling deck at sunset — every one of those moments depends on a crew who knows these waters personally, not a rotating cast of seasonal hires.

We are part of the Komodo Luxury network (5,000+ Google reviews, TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice 2025 — third consecutive recognition 2023–2025), and that reputation is built one voyage at a time by the people actually on board. Our leadership team reflects that philosophy directly: Captain Markus Jehamat has spent over 15 years navigating Komodo’s waters as a BNSP-certified Indonesian yacht captain; Dive Operations Lead Maria Ngganggus brings over a decade guiding divers through the park’s named sites as a PADI Divemaster and SSI Dive Guide; and Guest Experience Lead Benito Fernandez has spent over 12 years refining hospitality standards across the archipelago. Together that’s nearly four decades of combined team experience at the top of the organization alone — and it sets the bar for every crew member we bring aboard beneath them.

The Roles That Keep a Komodo Liveaboard Running

A typical Komodo Island Liveaboard voyage carries a compact, cross-trained crew — every role below has a direct line of accountability to Captain Markus or Maria, and every hire goes through the same vetting standard regardless of position.

Local Hiring, First — Why Flores Talent Leads Our Roster

We recruit from Labuan Bajo and the surrounding Flores coastal communities before we look anywhere else. Deck hands who grew up on traditional fishing boats already understand tide, wind, and anchorage instinct that no classroom can fully replicate. Dive guides raised diving these reefs as teenagers know exactly where the current pushes at Manta Point or how Castle Rock behaves on an incoming tide before their logbook says so. Hospitality staff from Flores villages bring genuine Manggaraian and Komodo-area warmth that guests consistently describe as the highlight of their trip, not a scripted service style.

This isn’t just a sourcing preference — it’s core to what makes a Komodo island liveaboard voyage feel authentic rather than assembled. Hiring locally also means our crew’s income stays in the communities that host our guests, and it keeps institutional knowledge of the park’s changing conditions inside the boat, season after season.

How to Apply: Our Six-Step Recruitment Process

  1. Send your CV and certifications. WhatsApp a photo or PDF of your CV, dive/maritime certification cards, and a recent photo to +62 811 3823 875, or email sales@komodoluxury.com.
  2. Initial screening call. A member of the Benito Fernandez guest-experience or Maria Ngganggus dive-operations team reviews your background and calls within a few working days.
  3. Document verification. We verify BNSP, PADI, SSI, or STCW certification numbers directly with the issuing body before proceeding — no exceptions, for guest safety.
  4. In-person or video interview. Labuan Bajo-based applicants meet the relevant department lead on the dock; overseas dive-instructor applicants can interview by video call.
  5. Trial voyage. Successful candidates join a working trip as a supervised trainee, shadowing an existing crew member on their exact role.
  6. Offer and onboarding. Confirmed hires receive a formal offer, safety-standards briefing, and their assigned yacht and department lead.

What New Crew Can Expect Onboard

New hires start on a trial voyage covering our 3D2N route first — it’s the fastest way to see the full daily rhythm without a long commitment on either side. Deck and dive crew rotate early starts (dive briefings usually run before 7am to catch the best visibility), galley crew work around three main meal services plus snacks, and guest-experience staff are on call from wake-up call to the last sundowner on the top deck. Dive guides are expected to know every stop on our dive sites hub in detail — current direction, typical depth, and what marine life to expect at spots like Manta Point — well before they’re allowed to brief guests solo. Crew also get exposure to our land-based stops across the Komodo destinations we visit, since hospitality and deck staff often help coordinate ranger-led dragon treks and beach landings alongside the dive team.

Pay follows Indonesian maritime and tourism industry standards for the role and experience level, reviewed at each contract renewal, with tips shared transparently among the crew rostered on a given voyage.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I apply as crew?

Send your CV, a recent photo, and copies of any relevant certifications (BNSP, PADI, SSI, STCW) via WhatsApp to +62 811 3823 875 or email sales@komodoluxury.com. A department lead reviews every application personally and calls qualified applicants within a few working days to schedule a screening interview.

What certifications needed?

Requirements depend on role. Captains need a BNSP Indonesian Yacht Captain license plus STCW Basic Safety Training. Dive guides need PADI Divemaster or SSI Dive Guide status at minimum, with Emergency First Response preferred. Chefs need Food Safety and Hygiene Training. Hospitality and deck roles have no mandatory certification but relevant experience is required.

Do you hire local Flores staff?

Yes — local hiring from Labuan Bajo and surrounding Flores communities is our default recruitment approach, not an exception. Local crew bring firsthand knowledge of tides, currents, and culture that guests consistently rate as central to their experience, and it keeps crew income circulating within the communities we operate from.

Dive guide requirements?

Dive guides need a minimum of PADI Divemaster or SSI Dive Guide certification, roughly 200+ logged dives with meaningful time in Indonesian waters, and working knowledge of every stop on our dive-sites roster before briefing guests unsupervised. Dive instructors need active PADI or SSI Open Water Instructor status. All dive staff report to our Dive Operations Lead.

Hospitality staff requirements?

Cabin, galley, and guest-experience crew need conversational English, a genuine hospitality mindset, and ideally prior experience in guest-facing tourism or homestay work. Formal hospitality management training is preferred but not mandatory — we run a supervised trial voyage so candidates can prove service standards in the actual working environment before a confirmed offer.
