Start planning 12 months out if you want July, August or September, and confirm your boat 9 to 12 months ahead — peak-season cabins on the better vessels are gone that early. For April to June or October to November, 4 to 6 months of lead time is normally enough. The order that matters most is: boat first, flights second, certification third, insurance and gear last.

Nothing about a Komodo trip is difficult on its own. What breaks trips is sequencing — buying international flights before a cabin is confirmed, or leaving an Advanced course until the month of departure and arriving without the logged dives a strong-current itinerary asks for.

What should you lock in 12 months before departure?
Three decisions, none of which cost money yet. First, your travel window — read the best time for a Komodo liveaboard before you assume your holiday dates work. Manta aggregation, water temperature and sea state all shift across the year, and the “best” month depends on what you actually want to see.
Second, trip length. Three days and two nights covers the central park. Six days and five nights reaches the northern and southern sites properly. Comparing the available liveaboard packages at this stage is free and tells you what each duration realistically includes.
Third, a shortlist of two or three vessels. Not a booking — a shortlist. Boats differ enormously in cabin layout, dive deck space, tender numbers and guide-to-guest ratio, and that matters more than the brochure photographs suggest.
What happens at the 9-month mark?
This is where money moves. Confirm the cabin with a deposit and get the terms in writing — deposit schedule, cancellation conditions, what happens if the itinerary is adjusted for weather. Our booking guide covers what a clean confirmation should contain.
Only after the cabin is confirmed should you buy flights. Labuan Bajo is served through Denpasar or Jakarta, and morning arrivals are safer than same-day tight connections; see departures from Labuan Bajo for how embarkation timing actually works. Build in a buffer night before departure. Guests who fly in the same morning are the ones who miss the boat when a domestic flight slips.

When do you need your certification finished?
Start any course at six months, not one. Open Water is the minimum for most Komodo itineraries, but the sites that make the region famous — Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, the Cauldron — are current-driven, and operators reasonably expect Advanced level plus recent drift experience before putting you in that water. Six months also gives you time to fix passport validity (six months beyond entry, blank pages available) and to check your medical questionnaire honestly. A condition that needs a physician’s sign-off is a minor task in February and a trip-ender in July.
What belongs at three months out?
Dive insurance with hyperbaric coverage — DAN or equivalent. Komodo is remote water; the nearest recompression chamber is in Bali, and evacuation from a boat is a logistical operation, not a taxi ride. Buy the policy now and carry the membership card.
Also at three months: a refresher dive if you have been dry for more than six months, and a look at your logbook. Many boats ask for a minimum number of logged dives on advanced itineraries, and three months is enough time to close that gap at a local site. It is also when you check remaining availability if friends have decided to join late.
What is left for the final month?
Service your regulator if it has not been serviced within a year. Replace tired mask straps and fin buckles. Pack for the season — a 3mm suit suits most of the year, but July to September water pushes many divers toward 5mm, and four dives a day make a hood or vest worth carrying. Add reef-safe sunscreen, seasickness medication started before you sail rather than after, and printed copies of your certification card and insurance. Confirm pickup timing with the operator directly: boats depart on tide and harbour schedules, not on yours.
Why does July to September need the longest lead time?
Three pressures stack. Northern-hemisphere summer holidays push demand into a fixed number of berths; conditions are at their most reliable, so experienced divers target the same weeks; and the fleet does not expand to meet demand, because the park operates on a controlled number of vessels. The strongest boats therefore sell peak dates 9 to 12 months out, and what remains at three months is leftover inventory rather than the best of it.
Shoulder months invert this. April to June and October to November offer real availability at four months, good visibility and quieter sites — the trade is slightly less settled weather.
Does the August 2026 earthquake change the timeline?
Not materially, so far. The M7.7 event on 15 August 2026 was centred roughly 200 km north-east of Labuan Bajo. Sailing operations reopened the same day under Maklumat 05/MP-VIII/2026 and Komodo National Park was not closed. Departures have continued on schedule. Our advice is unchanged: book on the normal timeline, keep your operator’s contact details reachable, and expect that any itinerary adjustment will be driven by sea state, as it always has been.
What if you only have a few weeks?
Short-notice trips are possible, particularly outside peak season and on shorter itineraries. You lose choice, not quality — the compromise is usually cabin category or departure date rather than the diving itself.
