Can children dive in Komodo, or only snorkel?
Children can dive, within the limits the training agencies set. PADI and SSI certify Junior Open Water divers from age 10. Juniors aged 10 and 11 are limited to 12 metres and must dive with a parent, guardian or dive professional; juniors aged 12 to 14 may go to 18 metres with a certified adult, and to 21 metres once they hold Junior Advanced Open Water. That certification itself opens at 12, and children who are not certified at all can try Discover Scuba Diving from 10.
Komodo adds a layer on top. What cabin setup works for a family?
Cabin geometry matters more than the brochure suggests. Look for a lower-deck cabin with a double plus a single, or two adjacent cabins reached through an internal corridor rather than across an open deck — a child crossing wet teak at 2am is a risk you can design out. Lower, midship cabins pitch and roll least. Ask whether a third berth is allowed and whether the cabin has its own bathroom.

How do you keep children safe on deck?
Liveaboards are working boats, and the hazards are unglamorous: open railings, an unguarded dive platform, a tender coming alongside in swell, wet ladders, hot engine and galley areas below. Set family rules on day one — no upper deck without an adult, nobody near the dive platform while tenders run, hold the rail on every ladder, life jacket for every tender transfer.
Brief the crew too: your child’s swimming level, any medical conditions, and who is responsible at each moment. Which land excursions suit children?
Rinca’s Loh Buaya is the better dragon site for families: the elevated boardwalk keeps clear structure between visitors and wildlife, the loop is short, and rangers escort every group. Padar Island’s viewpoint is the trip’s famous photograph and its hardest walk — a steep stepped climb with no shade, best done at first light. Yes. The M7.7 earthquake of 15 August 2026, centred roughly 200 km north-east of Labuan Bajo, did not close Komodo National Park, and sailing reopened the same day under Maklumat 05/MP-VIII/2026. Operations have run normally so far. When should you wait a few years?
Wait if your child cannot swim confidently, panics with a mask on, or has an ear condition that resists equalising.
