The practical rule: hold the cabin the moment your dates are firm, even if the flight is still hypothetical. A held cabin costs a deposit and a decision. A held flight costs your entire itinerary if the boat is gone.
What buffer should you leave between landing and boarding?
Arrive in Labuan Bajo at least one full day before departure, not the same morning. This single habit prevents more missed trips than anything else.
Liveaboards leave the harbour on a schedule set by tides, park entry timing and the first dive site of the itinerary. If your inbound flight is delayed by weather or reshuffled by the airline, the boat does not wait — it cannot, without cutting the trip short for everyone else on board. How reliable are flights into Labuan Bajo?
Komodo Airport (LBJ) is a small single-runway airport served mostly by narrow-body and turboprop aircraft. Most days it runs normally, but it is exposed to afternoon weather over Flores, rotation delays cascading from earlier legs, and schedule consolidation when low-season loads are thin.

Which is easier to change later — a cabin or a seat?
A seat, almost always. Indonesian carriers sell fare classes that allow date changes for a fee, and low-cost tickets can often be moved to a credit for later travel. Cabin dates are tied to a departure that either exists or does not; moving between two sold-out dates is not a change, it is a new search.
That asymmetry is the whole argument for the boat-first sequence: hold the inflexible item and buy the flexible one around it. When you do buy the ticket, pay the small premium for a fare that permits a date change.
What if you already booked the flight first?
It is recoverable more often than people fear. Does the August 2026 earthquake change the sequence?
Not materially. The M7.7 earthquake of 15 August 2026 was centred roughly 200 km northeast of Labuan Bajo; sailing operations reopened the same day under Maklumat 05/MP-VIII/2026, and Komodo National Park has not been closed so far. What it does reinforce is the value of the buffer day: when regional transport is disrupted for any reason, the guests who arrived a day early are the ones who still sail.
What is the correct booking order, step by step?
- Fix your travel window and trip length — most divers land on 4D3N or 6D5N.
- Check real departure dates and hold the cabin with a deposit.
