Why Mawan Is Komodo’s Most Reliable Manta Site
Mawan sits on a sandy plateau ringed by coral bommies that function as natural cleaning stations. Cleaner wrasse and butterflyfish set up shop on these coral heads, and reef mantas (Mobula alfredi) queue above them, hovering almost motionless while they are groomed. For divers this means mantas that stay put rather than cruising past once and vanishing.
During plankton blooms the site flips from cleaning station to feeding station. Mantas open their cephalic lobes and barrel-roll through the water column, sometimes chaining nose-to-tail in feeding trains of six to ten animals. Currents and Skill Level
Mawan is where we send Open Water divers who are not yet ready for the ripping currents of Castle Rock or Crystal Rock in the far north. Currents here are usually a gentle drift you can pause against by tucking behind a bommie. That said, tides still rule Komodo — our guides brief every dive on the moon phase and plan entries for slack or gentle flow so mantas stay settled and divers stay comfortable. For the strong-current north sites and The Cauldron (Shotgun), Advanced Open Water is strongly recommended.
