Three Sisters (Tiga Dara) is a remote dive site in southern Komodo National Park formed by three submerged seamounts rising from 30m+ to around 5m. Cold, nutrient-rich currents draw pelagics, macro critters and schooling fish, making it an advanced, expedition-only site reached by liveaboard.

Sitting in the cooler, greener waters of the south — well away from the manta highways and current-swept pinnacles of the north — this trio of underwater mountains rewards divers who are willing to trade visibility for biomass, and comfort for the raw, wild character of South Komodo. Where Is Three Sisters?
Three Sisters lies in the southern sector of Komodo National Park, in the stretch of water influenced by the colder Indian Ocean upwelling rather than the warmer Flores Sea to the north. The site is genuinely offshore — there is no shore access, no day-boat that reliably reaches it, and no shelter nearby. Getting here means a liveaboard positioned in the south, usually as part of a 4-day or longer expedition that also covers Manta Alley, Cannibal Rock and the volcanic reefs around Nusa Kode and Horseshoe Bay.
The three seamounts sit close together, their summits within recreational range and their bases dropping into deep blue water. Currents here are driven by the same tidal engine that powers the whole park, but the southern water is markedly cooler — often 20–24°C against the 27–29°C you enjoy at northern sites like Batu Bolong and Castle Rock. A 5mm wetsuit, hood and gloves are not luxuries in the south; they are the difference between a great dive and a cold, short one.

What You’ll See Underwater
The magic of Three Sisters is contrast. The cold, plankton-heavy water that limits visibility is exactly what feeds the reef, so the seamounts are blanketed in soft corals, gorgonians and crinoids in reds, oranges and yellows that positively glow. This is a site where you can shoot wide-angle and macro on the same dive.
- Pelagic action: grey reef sharks, whitetips, schooling trevally, mackerel and dogtooth tuna patrolling the current-facing sides.
- Macro treasures: frogfish, nudibranchs, pygmy seahorses on the gorgonians, cowries and shrimp — the south is macro country.
- Reef density: walls carpeted in soft coral and sea apples (Pseudocolochirus), a South Komodo signature.
- Big schools: fusiliers and snapper massing on the pinnacle summits between current bursts.
Because each seamount sits at a slightly different depth and orientation, dive guides read the tide and pick the sister that offers the best lee and the best chance of hanging in the blue to watch sharks and tuna cruise past.
Currents, Difficulty & Safety
Let us be direct: Three Sisters is not a beginner site. The seamounts are exposed, the current can accelerate without warning as the tide turns, and the summits are deep enough that bottom time management matters. We recommend Advanced Open Water certification, a minimum of 30 logged dives, and comfort with reef hooks, negative entries and drift diving. A surface marker buoy and audible signal are mandatory on our boats — retrievals in open southern water demand it.

How to Dive Three Sisters — Liveaboard Access
There is no way to dive Three Sisters comfortably as a day trip. The distance from Labuan Bajo (LBJ) and the exposed conditions make a liveaboard the only sensible platform. Our South Komodo expeditions run 4 to 7 nights, sailing overnight into the southern grounds so you wake up already at the seamounts with the whole day to dive.

Best Time to Dive Three Sisters
The dry season runs April to November, and this is the only realistic window for the south. Peak season is July to September, when the water is cleanest and the pelagic action most reliable — but also coldest, so bring exposure protection. The southern sites shut down effectively during the December–March wet season when swell makes the seamounts unsafe.
