Komodo Snorkeling Liveaboard: Manta, Turtles & Coral Gardens

Last updated: July 15, 2026 7 min read

A Komodo snorkeling liveaboard is a multi-day boat trip through Komodo National Park where you sleep aboard and snorkel manta cleaning stations, turtle-filled coral gardens, and reef walls daily. Trips run 3D2N to 4D3N from IDR 3.55M per person, no diving certification required, best April to November.

You do not need a scuba licence to experience the best of Komodo’s underwater world. At Komodo Island Liveaboard we have run specialist Komodo cruises since 2015, and roughly one in three guests aboard our yachts snorkel rather than dive. The reefs here sit in shallow, sun-lit water — many of the park’s signature encounters, including reef manta rays at Manta Point and green turtles at Siaba, happen in 2 to 8 metres, perfectly readable from the surface with a mask and fins.

Why Snorkel Komodo From a Liveaboard Instead of a Day Boat

Labuan Bajo (LBJ) day trips spend four to five hours motoring each way, leaving barely two hours in the water at crowded, easy-access sites. A liveaboard parks you inside the park overnight, so you drop in at dawn before the day fleet arrives and again at golden hour when mantas feed. You cover far more reef, in calmer conditions, with the same guide reading currents for you every session.

  • First and last light access — the best manta and reef-shark activity, minus the crowds
  • 3–4 snorkel sessions per day versus one or two on a day boat
  • Mixed groups welcome — divers and snorkellers cruise the same itinerary, so families and couples never split up
  • Pink Beach, Padar viewpoint and Komodo dragon treks woven between water stops

If you are travelling with non-swimming diving partners, our Komodo liveaboard for non-divers guide breaks down exactly how each cabin and deck day is structured for surface guests.

Best Snorkeling Sites We Visit

Komodo has two current regimes. Central and southern sites are gentle and ideal for snorkellers; several northern sites run strong tidal currents, so our guides position the tender for a drift and pick sheltered entry windows. You are never asked to fight a current.

SiteDepth (snorkel)What You SeeCurrent
Manta Point (Makassar Reef)3–6 mReef manta rays feeding, 3–5 m wingspanMild–moderate drift
Manta Alley (south)4–8 mManta aggregations, cleaner wrasse stationsModerate
Siaba Besar2–6 mGreen turtles, seagrass, hard-coral gardenGentle
Tatawa Besar3–8 mOrange soft-coral slope, reef fish cloudsGentle–mild
Batu Bolong (top reef)2–5 mDense coral, anthias, surface fish actionStrong — timed entry only
Pink Beach1–4 mCoral bommies off a rose-sand shoreCalm

Batu Bolong, Castle Rock and Crystal Rock are premier reefs, but their surface currents are strong; we only snorkel their sheltered corners at slack tide. For an honest current-by-current breakdown, see our Komodo dive sites guide.

When to Go

The dry season runs April to November and delivers the clearest water and calmest crossings — this is prime snorkeling season. July to September is peak, with the most reliable manta sightings at Manta Point and the best visibility, often 15–25 metres. Water sits at a warm 27–29°C year-round, so a rash guard or 3 mm shorty is plenty. We advise booking peak-season cabins six to eight weeks ahead because the daily park quota fills fast.

Getting There

Fly into Komodo Airport, Labuan Bajo (LBJ), with direct connections from Bali (Denpasar), Jakarta and Surabaya. Arrive the day before departure; we collect you from your hotel and shuttle you to the harbour. First-time visitors should read our Komodo liveaboard FAQ for packing lists, seasickness tips and family suitability.

Book Your Komodo Snorkeling Liveaboard

As Komodo Island Liveaboard — part of the Komodo Luxury group — we have specialised in this park, and only this park, for a decade. That focus is why our guides know exactly which reef will be flat and fish-rich on the day you sail. Secure any departure with a 50% deposit; the balance is due 14 days before your cruise. Message our team on WhatsApp with your dates and group size, and we will confirm a cabin and hold your park-quota slot the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know how to dive to join a Komodo snorkeling liveaboard?
No. Snorkelling requires no certification. Komodo’s signature sights — reef mantas at Manta Point and green turtles at Siaba — happen in 2 to 8 metres, easily seen from the surface. Divers and snorkellers share the same itinerary, and our guides provide vests and read every current for you.
How much does a Komodo snorkeling liveaboard cost?
Shared-cabin trips start at IDR 3.55M per person for a 3D2N Komodo Explorer and IDR 5.9M for a 4D3N cruise, up to IDR 12.5M for premium suites. Private full-yacht charters run IDR 52M to 280M. The IDR 650,000 park entry fee is additional.
When is the best time to snorkel in Komodo?
The dry season, April to November, offers the calmest seas and clearest water. July to September is peak, with 15–25 m visibility and the most reliable manta activity. Water stays a warm 27–29°C year-round, so a rash guard or thin shorty wetsuit is enough.
Are the currents dangerous for snorkellers in Komodo?
Central and southern sites like Siaba, Tatawa and Pink Beach are gentle and beginner-friendly. Northern reefs such as Batu Bolong and Castle Rock have strong currents, so we only snorkel their sheltered corners at slack tide with a safety tender alongside. You are never asked to fight a current.
