Golden Passage (sometimes written “Golden Passage Komodo” or the Gili Lawa channel) is the narrow strait separating Gili Lawa Darat from the northern tip of Komodo Island. Because it pinches a large volume of water through a tight gap, tidal exchange accelerates dramatically here — that funnelling is exactly what makes the diving so rich. It sits in the far north of Komodo National Park, roughly 3–4 hours by liveaboard from Labuan Bajo (LBJ), and pairs naturally in a northern-loop itinerary with Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, and the mantas at Manta Point.

Is Golden Passage Safe for Intermediate Divers?
On a calm slack tide, a confident Advanced diver with good buoyancy and an SMB will love it. During spring tides the channel rips hard, down-currents are possible, and it becomes an expert-only dive. This is precisely why operator experience matters more than anywhere else in the park. Our cruise directors read the tide tables daily, dive the channel on the correct water window, keep group sizes small (max 4 divers per guide), and every diver carries an SMB and a whistle. We will move the dive to a gentler site rather than push an unsafe entry — a standard the budget day-boats out of Labuan Bajo rarely hold to.
Best Time to Dive Golden Passage
Komodo’s dry season, April to November, offers the cleanest water and calmest surface conditions, making it the prime window for northern channel diving. July to September is peak season with the most consistent shark and manta action, though cooler thermoclines can push into the north. Liveaboard is the only sensible way to reach Golden Passage on the right tide — day-trips from LBJ arrive too late in the day and are locked to a fixed departure regardless of the water. A 3-day or 4-day Komodo liveaboard lets us position the boat overnight and drop you in at the perfect slack.
